Usana wines can be found on Klein Welmoed farm outside of Stellenbosch. It is owned by brothers J. P and Pierre Winshaw. Usana is a Xhosa word meaning ‘a new beginning’ or ‘a baby’. Klein Welmoed farm is 300 ha and 70 ha of that was used to produce about 25000 bottles in a year.
Cultivar: Pinot Gris (100%)
Wine of Origin: Stellenbosch (South Africa)
In the Vineyards: All the grapes came from a block on our farm, Klein Welmoed in Stellenbosch. All the vineyards are trellised. All grapes are harvested by hand in individual bins in optimal conditions to ensure true quality from beginning to end.
In the Cellar: To give this wine its gorgeous copper colour, 70% of the grapes were de-stemmed and naturally fermented on their skins for 12 days. The remaining 30% was whole bunch fermented for 8 days. The wine was aged for a further 10 months in a combination of predominantly old French oak barrels and a fermentation egg.
Analysis: Alcohol: 11.5 %; Residual Sugar: 1.1 g/l; Total acidity: 5.2 g/l; pH: 3. 92
Ageing Potential: This wine is beautiful and fresh at the moment and will age well for the next 2 to 3 years.
Serving suggestions: It is a versatile food wine. Its freshness will pair well with fresh seafood but the umami notes add another dimension into Asian inspired foods.
Origin of the Name: Our great grandfather, Dr. William Charles Winshaw was born in the USA. He ran away from home when he was 12 years old. A lucky bet on a horse and a few winning games of faro saw him become a professional gambler for part of his life. His whole life was a gamble from the moment he ran away from home, his expedition to South Africa, and eventually starting to make wine in South Africa.
Production: A small production of 5 barrels was produced.
