Usana wines can be found on Klein Welmoed farm outside of Stellenbosch. It is owned by brothers J. P and Pierre Winshaw. Usana is a Xhosa word meaning ‘a new beginning’ or ‘a baby’. Klein Welmoed farm is 300 ha and 70 ha of that was used to produce about 25000 bottles in a year.
Cultivar: Chardonnay (100%)
Wine of Origin: Stellenbosch (South Africa)
In the Vineyards: All the grapes came from a block on our farm, Klein Welmoed in Stellenbosch. All the vineyards are trellised. All grapes are harvested by hand in individual bins in optimal conditions to ensure true quality from beginning to end.
In the Cellar: We do whole bunch press. The wine was naturally fermented in French oak barrels of which 28% was new wood. The wine spent 9 months in the barrel before bottling. 100% of the wine was fermented and aged in barrels.
Analysis: Alcohol: 14 %; Residual Sugar: 1.9 g/l; Total acidity: 4.4 g/l; pH: 3.51
Ageing Potential: We believe that our wine improves with age and will drink at its best after a year or two of being in the bottle. The ageing potential is up to 5 years.
Serving suggestions: The Chardonnay will pair well with grilled fish and chicken dishes. It will also pair well with seafood such as salmon and tuna as well as lighter pork dishes.
Origin of the Name: Our great grandfather, Dr. William Charles Winshaw was born in the USA. He ran away from home when he was 12 years old. He followed the gold rush around the USA. Striking it lucky in the goldfields gave him the means to pursue other passions. His adventures eventually led him to South Africa where he followed his dream to become a successful winemaker.
Production: A small production of 5 barrels was produced.
